Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Cold temperatures are inevitable in Wisconsin.  When freezing temperatures hit, here are some helpful prevention tips:

• When you know temperatures will be dipping below freezing, allow water to run in all the sinks at a slow, constant drip. It only needs to trickle, and that tiny amount of water will keep the water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing.
• Open up the cabinet doors in the bathrooms and kitchen. This will allow the heat from the home to circulate and warm up the pipes.
• Keep the garage door closed to keep garage pipes from freezing.
• Keep your house at a warm, consistent temperature both day and night.
• If you leave your home for extended periods of time, do not set your thermostat lower than 55 degrees.
• If you do end up with frozen pipes, a hand-held hair dryer or heat lamp can thaw them.

What is that "white stuff" growing on my basement walls?

Have you ever seen that white/gray "fuzzy stuff" growing on your basement walls or in someone else's house?  Were you worried that it was hazardous?  Well, the "fuzzy stuff" is called efflorescense and it is NOT dangerous.  It is more annoying and unattractive, but nothing to worry about or nothing that can't be fixed.  

If you have a concrete or masonry block foundation, this is a common problem.  Efflorescence can be easily removed because it simply is salt.  If you observe efflorescence on in your home, this means that you have a water issue that must be taken care of.  This moisture problem can cause deterioration if ignored.  

The cause of this is water from the outside is penetrating the brick or concrete and comes in contact with minerals.  A chemical reaction then takes place and dissolves the minerals.  The moisture then migrates to the other side of the block or concrete (the inside of your home) and eventually evaporates.  As water evaporates from the surface the mineral deposits are left behind, and these efflorescence crystals can grow.

The concern is that the efflorescence is NOT just on the side of the brick or concrete, but these same crystals can also grow inside the brick or concrete and cause spalling.  The definition of spalling the breaking of ore, rock, stone or concrete into smaller pieces or fragments.  This spalling can make the surface peel, pop or flake off.  The salt pushes from the inside out and can eventually cause crumbling and deterioration.

Hopefully if you remove the efflorescence it does not come back.  If it does not return, this probably means that the cause was the initial moisture and salts from when the concrete was placed.  However, if the efflorescence does return, this is a clear indication that water is entering the brick or concrete wall and pushing the salts out.  

Can I Prevent Efflorescence?

The answer is YES!  The best way to prevent the efflorescence is to prevent water from infiltrating the wall. If you see efflorescence crystals it usually means there is a leak somewhere letting outside water in. Once, the source of the water infiltration has been located and stopped then the walls can be cleaned with an efflorescence remover.

While inside systems can divert the water, it may not solve the problem of efflorescence and other moisture-related mineral build-ups. Regardless of what is done on the inside, water is still entering through the wall from the outside.

The salt that ends up as efflorescence crystals on your walls, can come from salt laden soils or the Portland cement in the mortar and grout. The soluble salts could come from the sand or from contaminated water used to make the concrete, grout or mortar.

Another culprit is, of course, the clay brick itself. The natural clays used in the manufacture of brick often contain soluble alkali sulfates. Most modern fired clay brick have balanced chemical additives to immobilize the sulfates and render them insoluble. This prevents the salts from being dissolved into a solution that could migrate through the wall to the surface. Most fired clay brick do not greatly contribute towards the efflorescence problem.

Ladder Safety Tips

1. Check the weather.

Standing on a ladder in high winds could cause you to lose your balance. In addition, a drizzle can cause your ladder to become slippery. Make sure you pick a dry day with calm winds.

2. Inspect the ladder.

Before using your ladder, make sure it’s in good working order. There is nothing broken, or the ladder is not locking into place.

3. Use a ladder that is right for the job.

Different jobs require different-sized ladders. If you use the top step of a ladder to reach the gutters, you need to buy a more extended ladder to be safe. Be sure

the ladder extends three feet above the roof elevation when hanging those lights on the gutter.

4. Don’t over-reach.

Over-stretching on a ladder could cause it to kick out from under you and leave you hanging on the gutter.

5. Watch out for doors.

Remind your family that you are on the ladder by a door, so they do not open the door into the ladder. One idea is to put a note on the door they would open into the ladder so no one goes out the door.

6. Think before you move.

Home maintenance is important year-round, especially in fall as the weather changes. Here are some tasks to check off your home maintenance to-do list. 

• Drain your water heater- prevent buildup of minerals that cause your water heater to work less efficiently.
•  Clean your outside air conditioner- grass, leaves and debris can build up on outside air conditioners and cause issues. Cleaning air conditioners in fall prevents this and ensures that your air conditioner is running well for the next season.

MADISON, Wis. — Disasters can be difficult for kids to deal with, which is why ReadyWisconsin is encouraging families to take the time to make sure their youngest members know how to respond when the unexpected happens. September is Preparedness Month in Wisconsin, which is a reminder to everyone that disaster don’t wait, so make your plan today.

“Children may not fully understand what’s going on during a disaster or what steps they should be taking to remain safe,” said Dr. Darrell L. Williams, Wisconsin Emergency Management administrator. “During Preparedness Month, we encourage families to spend time going over emergency plans with kids and making sure they understand what to do.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought much uncertainty for families across Wisconsin, while the start of the school year has resulted in changes to the regular routines of many. Regardless of where they are spending their days, parents should talk to their children about what to do if there is an emergency at home, school, or daycare. Make sure they know who to contact and identify a safe meeting place. Put together a supply kit with your kids and include them in the process of creating an emergency plan for your family.

“Preparedness is a life-long effort, and even adults should spend time this month learning more about what they can do to help keep them and their loved ones safe,” Williams said. “Taking just a few minutes out of your day to discuss the types of disasters that could effect your community and how to react could make all the difference when facing an emergency.”

While many students started the year virtually due to COVID-19, educators looking ahead to the spring should consider helping their students prepare for disasters by offering the Student Tools for Emergency Planning (STEP) program. Designed for fourth and fifth-grade classrooms, this curriculum developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is made available by the state at no cost to educators. The program teaches important preparedness lessons to children and encourages them to take that information home.

“Since it began in 2011, STEP has helped over 80,000 children in Wisconsin learn about the importance of being prepared for the unexpected,” said Dr. Williams. “We are proud and excited to once again make this free program available to classrooms across the state.”

Fourth and fifth-grade teachers and school administrators interested in offering the STEP program in their schools or to virtual classrooms during the spring of 2021.

• Local is important!! 66% of shoppers said they plan to shop more at local small businesses.

How to Protect Your Eyes at Work

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, nearly 2,000 U.S. employees across industry lines experience work-related eye injuries that require medical treatment each day. These injuries can stem from a variety of hazards—including projectiles (e.g., dust, metal or wood), chemicals, radiation, bloodborne pathogens and even electronic devices.

Nevertheless, eye doctors confirm that utilizing proper safety precautions can help prevent or reduce the severity of 90% of work-related eye injuries. With this in mind, consider the following guidance for protecting your eyes at work and avoiding painful injuries:

· Know the risks—Make sure you are fully aware of any eye-related hazards within your workplace. Knowing the potential dangers that come with your specific job responsibilities is important to help you understand how to reduce your unique risks.

· Utilize proper protection—Be sure to wear adequate eye protection for the task or hazard at hand. Potential protective eyewear options include safety glasses, goggles, face shields and helmets. Regardless of which form of protective eyewear is required, ensure you know how to properly put on, use, store and maintain it. Inform your supervisor if your eye protection gets lost or damaged.

The management team at SERVPRO of Southwest Waukesha knows that some of the tasks that our technicians are required to do may not always be desirable. So we try to have fun in other ways to accomplish that. Fun activities outside of work help people interact a different setting. The entire team had fun and enjoyed competing against the clock to escape from two different rooms in the shortest amount of time at an escape room.

One of the most powerful reasons for team building is to get results. Through a series of planned team building events that are fun and motivational, teams build skills like communication, planning, problem-solving and conflict resolution. These team building activities help to facilitate long term team team growth through genuine connections, deeper discussions, and friendships.

1. Communication and working better together.
To no surprise, communication and working better together is the top reason why people choose team building. Everybody wants a friendly work environment, where people are comfortable and happy to talk to and work with anyone. One of the best outcomes for team building is that the activities actually work to improve communication. Many hold these activities with the specific goal of working on communication and trust. Stay Safe and Give Thanks

It’s almost turkey frying season, that means we all have to educate ourselves on the dangers of frying a turkey. Deep frying a turkey can be very dangerous for many reasons, including the high risk of fire. The oil used to fry the turkey is highly flammable and can lead to large fires, even with small amounts of oil. There is also a risk of tipping the fryer over, possibly causing fires and injuries.

If you are planning on frying a turkey this Thanksgiving, please follow proper safety procedure. Here are a few guidelines to follow to keep your family and your home safe. 

1. Do not fry your turkey in an enclosed area. 
2. Keep a fire extinguisher near the fryer. Be sure it is an all-purpose extinguisher that can handle fires from the heat source and from the grease.
3. Never leave the fryer unattended, just as you should never leave a stove unattended.
4. Don’t let children or pets near the fryer, even after you are done cooking as the oil could be hot hours after. 
5. Use proper safety equipment when frying, like potholders/oven mitts, wear long sleeves, and safety goggles to protect yourself from oil splatter.
