The History of Bags
We encourage everyone to please donate.
US at SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc do a bags tournament every year in order to raise money for different charities. This winter we held a tournament where all the earnings were donated to the Rodgers Behavioral Health Foundation. In total we raised $950 that will be donated to the Rodgers Foundation.
In honor of our upcoming fundraiser for HAWS and the Jefferson County Humane Society we have decided to look back on the history of how the game of bags was created.
Legend has it that a fourteenth-century cabinet maker by the name of Mr. Matthias Kuepermann created the game after watching children toss rocks into a nearby groundhog’s hole. Kuepermann was said to have been so concerned for the safety of the children that he utilized his carpentry skills and designed a safer game for them to play.
So, where does the “corn” come into play? Well, during this time, corn was utilized more often as a weight rather than a food because of its abundance. Kuepermann determined a bag of corn was much safer to throw than a stone.
(This information was found from https://www.cornholeworldwide.com/play-cornhole/history-of-cornhole/#:~:text=As%20Cornhole%20has%20become%20such,into%20a%20nearby%20groundhog's%20hole.)
We Encourage anyone to please join us as we raise funds for HAWS and the Jefferson County Humane Society at our bags tournament on March 6th, 2021. For more information about the tournament please contact us at (920) 541-1710.
SERVPRO Thanks Our Veteran!
Thank you Steve!
SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc would like to thank our military veterans and first responders for their service to our country and to our community. We would also like to thank our SERVPRO of our employee (Steve) who is a veteran of the United States Army!
Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have service in the United States Armed Forces. Being a federal holiday of the US, the greatest event of Veterans Day is celebrated with huge respect, happiness and acknowledgement throughout the country.
Veterans day will look a little different this year with COVID-19, but here are some ideas on how to celebrate while staying safe:
- Ask a Veteran about their time in the military, and really listen to the answer.
- Hang a U.S. flag in your yard.
- Hug a veteran (only if they live in your home) and thank them.
- Ask an aging Veteran to share with you their favorite military story.
- Visit the gravesite of a Veteran.
- Send supplies to a local Veterans Support program for homeless veterans.

SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc Congratulates its High School Graduate Employee and all Students
Congratulations Alli! SERVPRO's latest Graduate
SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc would like to congratulate all 2020 graduates. It is unfortunate that due to the current pandemic we can not celebrate as normal, but we can honor you.
In particular, SERVPRO would like to congratulate Alli, a 2020 graduate from Jefferson High School. Alli has been employed as a part-time employee and we would like to honor her in this blog. Please enjoy what Alli wrote about herself.
As a recent high school graduate, I have a lot of learning to do. SERVPRO has helped me since I was 15 and has taught me many life lessons I would have never learned otherwise. I’m very grateful to have so many people who are supportive of my endeavors in my career and personal life. The amount of life knowledge I’ve gained from my time here is invaluable. Not only do I know how to immediately respond to a disaster should it happen, but I’ve also learned how to help stay hydrated when it's extremely hot. Or that occasional light-headedness can often be combated with eating more greens. I've learned that sometimes life isn't pretty, but it doesn’t last forever. The lessons you learn at work don’t have to be based on your job title, they can be based on life skills and experiences as well. Throughout the character developing experience we call high school I've also been involved in the character developing experience of working for SERVPRO, and for that I can't express my level of gratitude.
Congratulations Alli! We are very proud of you and glad that you are part of the SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc team!

Social Distancing Cash Mob Held at Neighbors at 13 East
Manager Jenni Seisser holds a "I've Been Mobbed" sign surrounded by a few of the attendees showing their support for their local business
The Jefferson Chamber of Commerce held it's first ever Social Distancing CA$H MOB on Tuesday, June 30 from Noon-2:00pm at Neighbors at 13 East. Social distancing was encouraged, hand sanitizer was provided at the front door and face masks were a personal choice. There was also a carryout option. We also held a 50/50 raffle, and the winnings were generously donated back to the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce.
The concept of a CA$H MOB is to infuse cash into a local business quickly by a group of people via shopping or dining on a predetermined date and time. This is an opportune way to show support for our local businesses, especially during these difficult times.
CA$H MOBS are also a networking opportunity for chamber members to connect with new faces.

Designing a Post-coronavirus Office
Thank you to our partners at Midstate Insurance for sharing this important article designed to help employers get their office ready for when employees return back from the post-coronavirus safer-at-home orders.
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has changed many aspects of the current workplace, and soon, employers should begin planning for what their post-coronavirus office will look like. Previously, social distancing and COVID-19-related best practices hadn’t been a topic on the mind of most employers or employees. By updating office layouts, encouraging new behaviors and expanding remote work options, employers can help prevent the spread of future diseases, and protect the health and safety of employees.
Physical Changes to Workplaces
As employers prepare for employees who will be returning to the office, organizations can consider the following best practices for their office space:
-Increasing each employee’s personal space, and ensuring desks are 6 feet or more apart
-Creating walls and barriers between cubicles
-Creating a walk-traffic flow that discourages congestion
-Updating air-filtration systems
-Installing automatic doors
-Installing UV lighting systems
-Installing no-touch soap dispensers and sinks in bathrooms
-Making hand sanitizer and cleaning products readily available
While updating practices to best prevent the spread of illnesses will also require changes in behavior, employers can take a step in the right direction by ensuring their physical office space is aligned with encouraged behaviors of employees.
While every business is different, there are practices many organizations can implement and behaviors they can encourage. Common post-coronavirus adjustments may include:
-Create expectations for handwashing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one of the best actions to prevent the spread of coronaviruses is washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Encourage employees to do so often, and consider creating policies to reinforce this behavior.
-Ban or discourage shaking of hands. While shaking hands is an instinct in many cases, this practice can spread germs, diseases and illnesses at an expedited rate.
-Increase cleaning schedules. According to the CDC, COVID-19 can remain on hard surfaces for up to 12 hours, creating a potential risk of transmission. Review how cleaning schedules can be more frequent and thorough.
-Adjust meeting practices. Encourage limited amounts of participants in meetings, and advise them to spread out and avoid sharing multi-touch devices.
Technology Considerations for Employers
Beyond updating office layouts and encouraging virus resistant practices, some employers are considering how the use of technology can aid in efforts to prevent the spread of diseases. Some organizations are tracking employees’ distances through cellphones or other devices, and even screening employees and guests for high body temperatures. Employers can also consider installing or expanding the use of hands-free voice assistants, such as Amazon, Google or Apple devices, with the intent of reducing the use of shared technology surfaces used by multiple employees. While not all of these changes will make sense or be feasible for all organizations, employers can consider how updated business practices can encourage social distancing, and reduce the touching of shared surfaces—both during and even after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Expanding Telecommuting Options
According to a survey of U.S. employers by the Computing Technology Industry Association conducted in 2019, more than two-thirds of respondents across a range of different industries and professions reported increased productivity when workers telecommuted full- or part-time. While the feasibility of remote work varies depending on an employee’s job responsibilities, expanding remote work options offers other benefits as well. These additional benefits can include:
-Reduced greenhouse emissions
-The ability to tap into a broader talent pool
-Fewer opportunities for diseases such as coronaviruses to spread
Notably, by expanding remote opportunities postcoronavirus, employers can reduce the amount of human interaction that takes place at a physical location. Also, by allowing remote work, employees who are sick are less likely to physically attend the office. Best practices for expanding remote work include creating outlined companywide remote practices, rather than leaving remote work approval requests up to the subjective opinion of a manager. As employers consider how they can best create remote work policies, many considerations factor into the equation.
Preparing for Future Pandemics
Even after reopening, health experts warn that businesses should also be prepared for future pandemics. Additional waves of COVID-19 could reemerge in the near future, and employers should create plans that account for partial or full closings of office locations.
Prepare Your Post-coronavirus Office
As employers plan for how to operate post-coronavirus, creating preventive best practices can set up organizations for success. While the easy return-to-work procedure will be to fall back on existing practices, the COVID-19 pandemic allows an opportunity for organizations to consider how creating an updated workplace with virus-resistant practices, as well as expanding remote work opportunities can prepare them for future pandemics.
As employees reenter the job market, post-coronavirus practices will be top of mind. By being proactive and establishing appropriate measures and practices, employers can not only help prevent the spreading of diseases—but put employees at ease, knowing that necessary steps are being taken to ensure the health and safety of those who will be spending time at the office.
As laws and guidelines related to COVID-19 change, employers should consult with legal counsel when updating or changing policies.

Tips for Working From Home With Family
Social Distancing Can Be Accomplished At Home
How To Make Physical Distancing Work For Your Family
Physical distancing has presented parents with challenges that most of us have never faced before. Adjusting to working at home can blur the line between family life and work life.
Many of us at SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc are parents, so just like you, we’ve been looking for strategies that will work for our families. Below are just a few approaches we’ve found so far. While we realize every family has unique circumstances, we hope you’ll find something here that’s helpful.
Communicate, collaborate, and coordinate.
If both parents are trying to work from home, remember that you’re on the same team together. Try to set up a schedule that suits everyone. Some of us are taking shifts, where one parent works from 8:30am to 12:00pm, while the other cares for the kids, then switching from 12:30pm to 5:00pm. Make a plan, but leave room to be flexible.
…Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults…
Include your kids.
Ask your children to “help” in ways that make sense for their ages. You might help them make a “Time to Work” sign for you, then explain that when you hang it on the door, that means you need to concentrate. Help them make special artwork for your workspace—especially if you’ll be in video meetings. Your kids are more likely to respect boundaries between work time and family time if they feel invested in both.
Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds… Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Set realistic expectations.
“Productivity” looks different right now than it did three months ago. And, most of the people you work with are likely dealing with issues very similar to yours. Be a living example of the things you hope to receive from others. Give grace to your coworkers, to your children, and to yourself.
The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
As much as you can, enjoy this time you have together. It may be hard to remember right now, but just a few months ago, many of us were trying to find ways to spend more time with our kids. It’s true that our current circumstances come with real challenges. But, it’s also true that we have the power to choose how we respond. We can see them as setbacks that are causing us pain, or as opportunities to draw our families closer than ever. If you are looking for a deep cleaning sanitation company who specializes in both professional commercial cleaning and professional residential cleaning, call SERVPRO of Jefferson County/Oconomowoc 920-674-3002. It is the first responders who take the risk to help the people living in their community, and sometimes that get hurt or make the ultimate sacrifice while on the job. By supporting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, this is our way at SERVPRO Jefferson County/Oconomowoc to show appreciation and give back to those families who are dealing with the loss of a fire fighter.
If you are a first-responder who is interested in registering to play in the tournament, or you would like to make a contribution, please call our Marketing Department at SERVPRO Jefferson County/Oconomowoc at (920) 674-3002.
We are also looking for local businesses to help support this event by donating a prize or by becoming an official sponsor. If you are interested in being a sponsor or donating a prize, call us at (920) 674-3002 and ask to speak with one of our Marketing Team members.
